This course is an introduction to common skin disorders frequently encountered in a chiropractic office. The structure, function, and immune reactions of skin are reviewed. Students acquire basic information necessary for differential diagnosis and treatment of common skin diseases. Benign, pre-malignant, and malignant tumors are covered, including squamous cell carcinoma, basal cell carcinoma, and malignant melanoma. Other topics include vascular lesions, birthmarks, and inherited diseases such as psoriasis and pemphigus. Differential diagnosis of eczema and dermatitis comprise a major portion of this course. Other common conditions include acne, bacterial and superficial fungal infections, connective tissue disease, and nail disorders. Students learn to provide conservative treatment and counseling to patients with a variety of skin diseases.
